I really hate the time change! From a safety perspective, it causes so much harm.
Because we just changed time, here are 3 of the most notable issues that I have come to realize in my time doing safety that you should watch for and how to combat them.
Sleep Disruption: Did you know that people loose 40 minutes of sleep and often during the first couple of days have disrupted sleep as well as they get used to the time difference. Not only does this make us more tired, it is a challenge to productivity. This can be helped by sticking to your normal sleep schedule of going to bed and waking up. If you are able to have a quick 15 minute nap partway through your day, this can also make the adjustment easier.
Higher Accident Rates: There is a definite spike in workplace accident and incidents, but also in traffic accidents. Because people aren’t getting their rest like they should, their brains and bodies are not working at their optimum and this can cause incidents and injuries. The same tips above will help out with this fatigue. Also, in the workplace, consider having more micro-breaks or check-ins with supervisors to ensure everyone is doing ok.
Mental Health Issues: The changes in when the daylight is around can have an effect on our mental health. This combined with less daylight in general in the winter months can be quite detrimental. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a real thing! Finding ways to improve mood and mental health through relationships, activities and seeking help when needed are critical to get through the time changes and winter months with less daylight.
Once we are more aware of some of the negative effect that Daylight Saving Time can play on on our physical and mental health as well as impacting us at work and on the way to work, we realize just how much we need tools in our toolbox to combat this. As you go through these next few months of winter and less daylight, think of ways that you can support not only yourself but others in your sphere with these tips.
